The mission of the Bridges program is to provide an
alternative educational and therapeutic environment
that allows elementary students with significant
unmet emotional/behavioral needs to progress
academically and behaviorally. The program is
a component of the Wake County Public School System
and is located in a wing of Mt. Vernon School.
Students best served by the Bridges Program are
students in Kindergarten through 5th grade
experiencing academic, emotional and behavioral
difficulties interfering with school success.
Students difficulties may also include academic,
family, behavioral, social, neurological, and
thought/mood disorders.
The goal for the Bridges Program is to give students
the opportunity to learn and demonstrate responsible
behavior, to express feelings and needs
appropriately, to develop positive self-esteem, and
to improve academic functioning.
The number of students attending Bridges varies
during the school year as students transition to
appropriate educational settings and as new students
are referred and accepted. Bridges can serve
up to 56 students at one time.
Staff at Bridges includes a facilitator, lead
teacher, secretary, teaching staff (teachers and
teacher assistants), psychologist, social worker,
liaisons, and crisis assistants. Bridges also
has physical education, music and art teachers each
one day a week.
